Wednesday 17th June

Hello Class One,

This week our learning is around the story of Princess Mirror-Belle and the Dragon Pox! We will have some activities themed around the story, potions and castle themed activities!

It would be fantastic to see some of everyone’s home learning this week. Please send me a photo and a message about the things you have been learning and getting up to at home.

Keep sending us lots of photos of the fantastic things you are doing at home.

Mrs Coleman-Harris x

Parents remember to do what you can (2 hours throughout the day is plenty- this doesn’t need to be all in one go!) and to learn lots more through your own play too.

Watch the animated story of Princess Mirror-Belle and the Dragon Pox here

Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAFaJfcqqt4 Make predictions and talk about the main events, characters and setting as you watch it together. What do you think of the characters? Why? How could we cure the dragon pox? What will Ellen’s family say about the mess in the bathroom?

Literacy-

Nursery and Reception

Can you pretend you are Ellen from the story. Think about all of the fun that you had with Princess Mirror-Belle finding a cure for your dragon pox! Can you write a letter to Princess Mirror-Belle explaining what you enjoyed playing when she came to visit and tell her about what your mum did and said when she discovered the mess in the bathroom!

Talk together about what you would write in your letter.

Nursery can you ask your parents to help you write the words in your letter to the Princess. You can help by listening for the sounds, telling your parents what sound to write, finding the sounds on a letter mat and have a go at writing some of the initial sounds or words.

Reception can you independently use your phonics and your letter mats to write sentences in your letter to the Princess.

Here are some ideas for things you could write in your letter.

Dear Princess Mirror-Belle,

I had so much fun with you.

It was fun in the bath.

We did make a big mess!

My mum was cross!

I cleaned up.

See you soon!

Love from Ellen.

Maybe you could put your letter in an envelope, make a stamp for it, create a magic post box and post the letter to Princess Mirror-Belle.

Draw, write and practice forming letters and numbers in foam.

Continue to practice your letter formation

I have recorded a letter formation video for you to help you develop your letter formation at home. It’s quite long so you may want to just practice a few letters at a time. I hope it helps! When you open the link, it can be slow loading. Wait a while and it should start to work.

It is super to hear about how this is helping lots of you with your letter formation!

Forming numbers

I have recorded a video to help you develop your number formation.

Other play based  maths activities for Nursery to work on throughout the week

  • Colour and shape hunt-hunt for colours, shapes and patterns throughout the story. Can you create some more pattern PJs for the Princess? What shapes, colours and patterns will you use?

  • Counting skills-  count the different things you see in the story. How many dragon pox does the Princess have? How many toilet rolls can you spot? How many fish are in the bath? Can you tally them? Can you draw the amount?

  • Play with castle themed toys and sort them in different ways e.g into knights, dragons, princesses etc. Can you make number labels for the groups? Which group has the most? Least? Same amount?

Other play based maths activities for Reception to work on throughout the week

  • Sequence your bedtime routine- You could make your own picture cards or print some here https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/T-CR-28935-bedtime. Talk about your bedtime routine and sequence it. What do you do first? Next? After that? finally?

  • Order numbers 0-20, then count and draw the matching amount of dragons or princesses for each number e.g draw 4 wands, 10 dragons and 19 spell books.

  • Doubling-create a Princess and draw some dragon pox. Can you place some dragon pox on one side of the Princess’ face (up to 10) Now can you double it and place the same amount on the other side of her face? How many does she have altogether?

  • Sharing- Make some playdough food or collect some toys. Can you share them between Ellen and Princess Mirror-Belle fairly?

  • Adding and subtracting using lots of practical resources (use castle themed objects if you have them)  and drawings where you can. Use number stories to help with adding and subtracting e.g there were 2 knights and 4 dragons, how many altogether? Make/draw/get the amounts of knights and dragons to help set up and solve this. Look at recording as a number sentence together 2 + 4 =  Continue to make your own number addition stories.

The Princess had 5 tiaras and then 3 were taken away by the wizard, how many are there now? Make or draw 5 tiaras, subtract the 3 (cross them out/take them). Look at recording as a number sentence together 5 - 3 = Now make some of your own subtraction number stories.

  • 1 more and 1 less- create a picture of Ellen or Princess Mirror-Belle on a whiteboard.  Draw an amount of dragon pox on her face. What if there was one more? 1 less? 2 more? 2 less? Can you draw more or take some away and find out what the total is now?
