Monday 1st June

Hello Class One,

This week our learning is around the story of The Snail and the Whale! We will have some activities themed the story, sea creatures and snails!

I am going back to school today to teach some of you. I can’t wait to see you and teach you in Class One again! If you are staying home to learn there is lots to keep you busy here and I will see you soon. Hopefully we can arrange a Google Meeting soon and I will continue to film some stories for you to listen to at home. Keep sending me lots of photos of the fantastic things you are doing at home too.

Have a super week!

Parents remember to do what you can (2 hours is plenty- this doesn’t need to be all in one go!) and to learn lots more through your own play too.

Watch the animated story of The Snail and The Whale.

Here is the link https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000cslw/the-snail-and-the-whale Make predictions and talk about the main events, characters and setting as you watch it together. What do you think of the characters? Why? How would you save the whale? How would you escape from the sharks? What do you think of the snail and whale’s friendship? What if they didn’t help the whale?

Literacy-

Nursery and Reception

Draw an under the sea picture! What sea creatures will you draw swimming through the sea? What will be at the bottom of the sea on the sand? Maybe there will be something for pirates to search for? Maybe there will be places for fish to hide?

Nursery can you label some of the things you have drawn with the initial sound or more sounds you can hear? For example what sounds can you hear in fish? I can hear the initial sound f.  Then i and then sh. Then tell your parents all about your picture and they can write down what you said.

Reception can you write some super sentences about what you have drawn. Use your phonics to spell and describe what can be seen.

I can see…

It is a….

It is a friendly dolphin.    I can see sparkly, gold treasure.

The sea is light blue.     The sand is soggy.

Letter formation practice for Nursery and Reception

I have recorded a letter formation video for you to help you develop your letter formation at home. It’s quite long so you may want to just practice a few letters at a time. I hope it helps! When you open the link, it can be slow loading. Wait a while and it should start to work.

Maths

All Nursery and Reception children can have a go at completing some of the day 1 and 2 Superworm themed maths challenges over the next two days.

Here is the link. Click on Summer term- Week 6 (w/c 1st June) and all of the activities for the week will be there. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Forming numbers

I have recorded a video to help you develop your number formation.

Other play based  maths activities for Nursery to work on throughout the week

  • Roll a dice- count the spots and draw the matching amount of sea creatures. Can you form the number to match the amount?

  • Counting skills-  Draw, make or print off some sea creatures (up to 5, then 10 and extend the number further if your child is confident). Hide them, use a timer of 1 minute and hunt for them in the garden or in a water tray. Then encourage your child to line them up and then touch count them accurately. How many did you find in 1 minute? Can you make a matching number label together? Then swap over to see how many mum or dad can find. Can you compare who found more/the most/less/the least?

  • Play with sea creatures and sort them in different ways. Can you make number labels for the groups of sea creatures? Which group has the most? Least? Same amount?

Other play based maths activities for Reception to work on throughout the week

  • Order numbers 0-20, then count and draw the matching amount of sea creatures for each number e.g draw 4 starfish, 10 fish and 19 sharks.

  • Doubling-create some fish using card or drawings, place an amount of up to 10 fish on a blue piece of paper, double it and add the same amount to another blue piece of paper, how many do you have in total? Double…. is….

  • Sharing- make playdough sharks and food.  Use 2, then 4,6,8,10 pieces of food for the sharks, share them fairly between the two sharks. What if there were 5 pieces of food to share? What if there were 3 or 4 sharks? How would you share a whole piece of food  between 2 sharks? Can you draw a picture to show what you would do to share the food?

  • Adding and subtracting using lots of practical resources (use sea creatures if you have them)  and drawings where you can. Use number stories to help with adding and subtracting e.g there were 2 fish and 4 jellyfish, how many altogether? Make/draw/get the amounts of fish and jellyfish to help set up and solve this. Look at recording as a number sentence together 2 + 4 =  Continue to make your own number addition stories.

There were had 5 stingrays and then 3 swan away, how many are there now? Make or draw 5 stingrays, subtract the 3 (cross them out/take them). Look at recording as a number sentence together 5 - 3 = Now make some of your own subtraction number stories.

  • 1 more and 1 less- create some whales using drawings, place an amount into a picture of under the sea.  What if there was one more? 1 less? 2 more? 2 less?
